Understanding Your Hospital Bill

Your bill reflects all of the services provided during your stay at the hospital. Charges fall into two categories: a basic daily rate and bills for professional services. Charges for your daily rate include your room, meals, nursing care, housekeeping, and telephone.

Bills for professional services are received as a result of tests or treatments used in diagnosing and treating your condition while you are a patient. You may receive charges from physicians that you did not see in person. Pathologists, radiologists, cardiologists, anesthesiologists and other specialists perform these services and are required to submit separate bills.

If you have questions about any charges, please call the number printed on your statement.

Hospital staff will bill your insurance company first as a courtesy to you. We will do everything possible to expedite your claim. Please remember that your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance provider. You have the final responsibility for payment of your remaining hospital bill after insurance.

The hospital has several payment options available to assist you in paying your bill. Please contact any of the following patient advocates to learn more:

  • Felicia Jensen (Medicaid) 435-528-7246 ext. 2631

  • Skylah Williams Medicare 435-528-7246 ext. 2633

  • Lana Barney Insurance 435-528-7246 ext. 2634

  • Chontae Thompson (Self Pay or Patient Responsibility) 435-528-7246 ext. 2604

Insurance Payment

Gunnison Valley Hospital encourages all patients to familiarize themselves with the terms of their insurance coverage. This will help you understand the hospital’s billing and charges. If the hospital has a question about your insurance coverage, a member of the Patient Financial Services Department will contact you or a member of your family while you are here. Specific information is needed in order to process your claims.

If you have health insurance, Gunnison Valley Hospital will need a copy of your identification card. We may also need the insurance forms, which are supplied by your employer or the insurance company. When you are admitted to the hospital, you will be asked to assign benefits from your insurance company directly to Gunnison Valley Hospital.

Medicare/Medicaid Coverage

Gunnison Valley Hospital will need a copy of your Medicare card to verify eligibility and process your Medicare claim. You should be aware that the Medicare specifically excludes payment for certain items and services, such as cosmetic surgery, hearing evaluations, personal comfort items, and some oral surgery procedures. Certain pharmacy items are not covered as well. Deductibles and co-payments are your responsibility.

If you are covered by Medicaid, Gunnison Valley Hospital will need a copy of your Medicaid card. Medicaid also has payment limitations on a number of services and items. Medicaid does not pay for the cost of a private room unless it is medically necessary.

Private Pay

If you do not have insurance, a Patient Financial Counselor will discuss financial arrangements with you. A staff member from the hospital, who is representing the Division of Family Services, is also available to assist you in applying for Medicaid or other government assistance programs.

PPO Payment

If you are a member of a PPO, your plan may have special requirements, such as a second surgical opinion or pre-authorization for certain tests or procedures. It is your responsibility to make sure the requirements of your plan have been met. If your plan’s requirements are not followed, you may be financially responsible for all or part of the services rendered in the hospital. Some physician specialists may not participate in your healthcare plan and their services may not be covered.
